This is a senior role within the prison education team, focused on supporting the delivery of high‑quality teaching - particularly Functional Skills - to learners in custody. The core purpose of the role is to help ensure learners develop the essential skills they need for rehabilitation, personal growth, and future employment. It’s a position where you can genuinely see the impact of your work.
As Assistant Manager, you’ll be working closely with the Education Manager to support the day‑to‑day running of the department. That includes overseeing curriculum delivery across Functional Skills, PSD and work‑based learning, and leading on quality assurance and continuous improvement. You’ll be supporting tutors, observing practice, and helping raise teaching standards across the team.
You’ll also be responsible for key operational areas such as learner induction, class allocation, attendance and behaviour, making sure the department runs smoothly and meets Ofsted expectations and key performance indicators. It’s a hands‑on leadership role with a strong focus on quality, staff development, and maintaining high standards across the provision.
In terms of what they’re looking for, you’ll need a recognised teaching qualification and strong experience delivering Functional Skills. Experience in curriculum development or quality improvement is highly valued, along with confident leadership and communication skills. The ability to motivate and support teaching staff is essential, and because of the nature of the site, a driving licence and access to a vehicle are required.
Prison education is a unique environment - it can be challenging, but it’s incredibly rewarding. You’re working with learners who often haven’t had positive experiences in education before, and the progress they make can be genuinely life‑changing. This role gives you the chance to make a real difference while shaping the quality and direction of the education provision.
